He Scorned The Shame

He Scorned the Shame

The purpose of this article is to briefly introduce two major biblical concepts:

1: The Mystery of the Gospel: A Marriage Covenant Restored

2: Vinegar on the Cross: Removing the Curse and Scorning the Shame

-note: some words are bolded for emphasis and serve as a common link between ideas presented in scripture

The Mystery of the Gospel: A Marriage Covenant Restored

The Bride (Israel*) was married to Yahweh

Exodus 34:10

“And he said, “Behold, I am making a covenant. Before all your people I will do marvels, such as have not been created in all the earth or in any nation. And all the people among whom you are shall see the work of Yahweh, for it is an awesome thing that I will do with you.”

Exodus 34:27

“And Yahweh said to Moses, “Write these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.”

The Bride Was Unfaithful

Malachi 2:11

“Judah has been faithless, and abomination has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem. For Judah has profaned the sanctuary of Yahweh, which he loves, and has married the daughter of a foreign god.”

Jeremiah 3:1-5

1 “If a man divorces his wife and she goes from him and becomes another man’s wife, will he return to her? Would not that land be greatly polluted? You have played the whore with many lovers; and would you return to me? declares Yahweh. 2 Lift up your eyes to the bare heights, and see! Where have you not been ravished? By the waysides you have sat awaiting lovers like an Arab in the wilderness. You have polluted the land with your vile whoredom. 3 Therefore the showers have been withheld, and the spring rain has not come; yet you have the forehead of a whore; you refuse to be ashamed. 4 Have you not just now called to me, ‘My father, you are the friend of my youth— 5 will he be angry forever, will he be indignant to the end?’ Behold, you have spoken, but you have done all the evil that you could.”

The Bride Was Divorced

Jeremiah 3:8-10

8She saw that for all the adulteries of that faithless one, Israel, I had sent her away with a decree of divorce. Yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear, but she too went and played the whore. 9Because she took her whoredom lightly, she polluted the land, committing adultery with stone and tree. 10Yet for all this her treacherous sister Judah did not return to me with her whole heart, but in pretense, declares Yahweh.”

The Marriage Covenant Prophesied to Be Restored

Isaiah 54:4-8

“4 “Fear not, for you will not be ashamed; be not confounded, for you will not be disgraced; for you will forget the shame of your youth, and the reproach of your widowhood you will remember no more. 5 For your Maker is your husband, Yahweh of hosts is his name; and the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer, the God of the whole earth he is called. 6 For Yahweh has called you like a wife deserted and grieved in spirit, like a wife of youth when she is cast off, says your God. 7 For a brief moment I deserted you, but with great compassion I will gather you. 8 In overflowing anger for a moment I hid my face from you, but with everlasting love I will have compassion on you,” says Yahweh, your Redeemer.”

Jeremiah 3:11-18

“11And Yahweh said to me, “Faithless Israel has shown herself more righteous than treacherous Judah. 12Go, and proclaim these words toward the north, and say,

“‘Return, faithless Israel, declares Yahweh. I will not look on you in anger, for I am merciful, declares Yahweh; I will not be angry forever. 13 Only acknowledge your guilt, that you rebelled against Yahweh your God and scattered your favors among foreigners under every green tree, and that you have not obeyed my voice, declares Yahweh. 14 Return, O faithless children, declares Yahweh; for I am your master; I will take you, one from a city and two from a family, and I will bring you to Zion.

15“‘And I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will feed you with knowledge and understanding. 16And when you have multiplied and increased in the land, in those days, declares Yahweh, they shall no more say, “The ark of the covenant of Yahweh.” It shall not come to mind or be remembered or missed; it shall not be made again. 17At that time Jerusalem shall be called the throne of Yahweh, and all nations shall gather to it, to the presence of Yahweh in Jerusalem, and they shall no more stubbornly follow their own evil heart. 18In those days the house of Judah shall join the house of Israel, and together they shall come from the land of the north to the land that I gave your fathers for a heritage.”

Hosea 2:14-20

“14 “Therefore, behold, I will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness,

and speak tenderly to her. 15 And there I will give her her vineyards and make the Valley of Achor a door of hope. And there she shall answer as in the days of her youth, as at the time when she came out of the land of Egypt. (Yahweh gave the written marriage covenant at Sinai just after they came out of Egypt)

16“And in that day, declares Yahweh, you will call me ‘My Husband,’ and no longer will you call me ‘My Baal.’ 17For I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth, and they shall be remembered by name no more. 18And I will make for them a covenant on that day with the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens, and the creeping things of the ground. And I will abolish the bow, the sword, and war from the land, and I will make you lie down in safety. 19And I will betroth you to me forever. I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love and in mercy. 20I will betroth you to me in faithfulness. And you shall know Yahweh.”

Hosea 6:1-2

1 “Come, let us return to Yahweh; for he has torn us, that he may heal us; he has struck us down, and he will bind us up. 2 After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will raise us up, that we may live before him”

-This passage is NOT referring to Christ’s resurrection as some may have you believe, although His resurrection is very important. The Messiah was IN the grave for 3 days and 3 days and therefore could not have been raised ON the third day. It is referring to 3,000 years. A thousand years is as one day to Yahweh, and He intends to restore His kingdom on earth and renew a perfect marriage to Israel approximately 2,000 years (or 2 days) from the time of Messiah on the earth. This is also 6 days (6,000 years) after the creation of the earth. On the 7th day (year 7,000) he will bring the Great Sabbath onto the earth with the coming of His kingdom. This 7th day occurs at the same time as the 3rd day, but they each have a different point of reference. The 7th day is counted from Creation. The 3rd day is counted from Messiah, the one who came to restore the Marriage.

Jeremiah 31:31-33

31“The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. 32It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them” declares the Lord. 33“This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.

The Marriage Covenant Restored

Hebrews 10:11-25

11And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. 14For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. 15And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying,

16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds,”

17then he adds, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”

18Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin. 19Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, 20by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, 21and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. 24And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

Now we see it all come together! Yeshua* re-inaugurated the marriage covenant between Yahweh and Israel though His death on the cross and resurrection. Please keep the bolded words in your mind as we will re-visit these terms later on in this article.

Vinegar on the Cross: Removing the Curse and Scorning the Shame

John 19:28-29

“28After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” 29A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth.”

Remember when Yeshua was on the cross and He was given vinegar to drink in order to “fulfill the scripture?” Let me try to explain why, by going back to the particular scripture that is fulfilled. You will see why this is such a Great Mystery!

Numbers 5:11-29

“11And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 12“Speak to the people of Israel, If any man’s wife goes astray and breaks faith with him, 13if a man lies with her sexually, and it is hidden from the eyes of her husband, and she is undetected though she has defiled herself, and there is no witness against her, since she was not taken in the act, 14and if the spirit of jealousy comes over him and he is jealous of his wife who has defiled herself, or if the spirit of jealousy comes over him and he is jealous of his wife, though she has not defiled herself, 15then the man shall bring his wife to the priest and bring the offering required of her, a tenth of an ephah of barley flour. He shall pour no oil on it and put no frankincense on it, for it is a grain offering of jealousy, a grain offering of remembrance, bringing iniquity to remembrance.

16“And the priest shall bring her near and set her before Yahweh. 17And the priest shall take holy water in an earthenware vessel and take some of the dust that is on the floor of the tabernacle and put it into the water. 18And the priest shall set the woman before Yahweh and unbind the hair of the woman’s head and place in her hands the grain offering of remembrance, which is the grain offering of jealousy. And in his hand the priest shall have the water of bitterness that brings the curse. 19Then the priest shall make her take an oath, saying, ‘If no man has lain with you, and if you have not turned aside to uncleanness while you were under your husband’s authority, be free from this water of bitterness that brings the curse. 20But if you have gone astray, though you are under your husband’s authority, and if you have defiled yourself, and some man other than your husband has lain with you, 21then’ (let the priest make the woman take the oath of the curse, and say to the woman) ‘Yahweh make you a curse and an oath among your people, when Yahweh makes your thigh fall away and your body swell. 22May this water that brings the curse pass into your bowels and make your womb swell and your thigh fall away.’ And the woman shall say, ‘Amen, Amen.’

23“Then the priest shall write these curses in a book and wash them off into the water of bitterness. 24And he shall make the woman drink the water of bitterness that brings the curse, and the water that brings the curse shall enter into her and cause bitter pain. 25And the priest shall take the grain offering of jealousy out of the woman’s hand and shall wave the grain offering before Yahweh and bring it to the altar. 26And the priest shall take a handful of the grain offering, as its memorial portion, and burn it on the altar, and afterward shall make the woman drink the water. 27And when he has made her drink the water, then, if she has defiled herself and has broken faith with her husband, the water that brings the curse shall enter into her and cause bitter pain, and her womb shall swell, and her thigh shall fall away, and the woman shall become a curse among her people. 28But if the woman has not defiled herself and is clean, then she shall be free and shall conceive children.scroll.jpg

29“This is the law in cases of jealousy, when a wife, though under her husband’s authority, goes astray and defiles herself, 30 or when the spirit of jealousy comes over a man and he is jealous of his wife. Then he shall set the woman before Yahweh, and the priest shall carry out for her all this law. 31The man shall be free from iniquity, but the woman shall bear her iniquity.””

We see that an unfaithful wife, if suspected, is required to drink the bitter water that brings a curse. But how does this relate to Yeshua drinking vinegar on the cross? Just wait!

Deut 24:1-4

1If a man marries a woman who becomes displeasing to him because he finds something indecent about her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, 2and if after she leaves his house she becomes the wife of another man, 3and her second husband dislikes her and writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, or if he dies, 4then her first husband, who divorced her, is not allowed to marry her again after she has been defiled. That would be detestable in the eyes of Yahweh. Do not bring sin upon the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.

-We see here that divorce is final. Once a man divorces his wife and she remarries, she can never remarry him.

How, then, is Israel to be remarried to Yahweh?!

Jeremiah 3:1

“If a man divorces his wife and she goes from him and becomes another man’s wife, will he return to her? Would not that land be greatly polluted? You have played the whore with many lovers; and would you return to me? declares Yahweh”

1 Corinthians 7:39

“A wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only in Yahweh.”

Romans 7:1-3

“1Or do you not know, brothers—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives? 2For a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law of marriage. 3Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress.”

Here we see that marriage laws are no longer binding upon death. Because Israel committed adultery, marriage laws prevented Israel from being restored into marriage with Yahweh. Only the death of one of the parties in the marriage covenant could nullify marriage laws…yep you guessed it He died for us so that He could restore us to Him!

This is the great mystery of the Gospel!

Ephesians 5:25-32

“25Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. 28In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, 30because we are members of his body. 31“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 32This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.”

Ephesians 6:19

“and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel”

Ephesians 3:6

6This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

1 Corinthians 2:7-9

7But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. 8None of the rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9But, as it is written,

“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard,

nor the heart of man imagined,

what God has prepared for those who love him”

Back to the Vinegar

Colossians 2:13-14

“13And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.”

-Remember the passage from Numbers 5:11-21 where the priest would wash the record with water, and create cursed, bitter water that the woman would then drink?

Yeshua cancelled that decree against us by washing us with water and taking that cursed, bitter water and drinking it himself on the cross!! He is our Great Mechitsedekian High Priest!

i thirst.jpg

John 19:28-29

“28After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” 29A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth.”

-This is where Yeshua drinks the bitter water on OUR behalf, thus taking the shame that we were to supposed to endure. He scorned the shame on the cross so that we would no longer be called “Deserted.”

Isaiah 62:4

“You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate, but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married; for the LORD delights in you, and your land shall be married.”

The Torah decrees a curse upon us because of our unfaithfulness, yet Yeshua set us free from that Curse!! Praise Yahweh!

Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Yeshua the Messiah, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages but has now been disclosed and through the prophetic writings has been made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith— to the only wise God be glory forevermore through Yeshua the Messiah! Amen.

*”Israel”: This term can collectively refer to “Israel” alone, “Israel” and “Judah”, and / or the congregation or assembly of Yahweh. After the kingdom of Israel divided into the Northern Kingdom of Israel and the Southern Kingdom of Judah each respective party became known as “Israel” and “Judah”. The modern-day word “church” comes from the same word for “assembly” in the Old Testament, therefore, anyone who is a part of the assembly / church through faith is grafted into Israel through the Messiah Yeshua (Jesus). Please see also “Grafting Theology.”

*Yeshua: means “salvation” in Hebrew, also known as “Jesus”
